For those who know me, you can attest to the fact that I am intrigued by the strange, the obscure, the odd things in society that really don't seem to have a place in the so called "normal realm of things."
Perhaps, that is why I am so fascinated by a new show I discovered on Netflix called "Oddities." Yes, it may have been on regular cable TV for a while, but since I refuse to pay to watch television (that's another story in itself) I only recently came across this wonderfully, bizarre show. The show highlights the day to day events of the NY based store called Obscura, which caters to the cooky, unusual type of folk that seem out of place in the traditional button-down world that society deems appropriate and safe. The store carries a variety of the most unusual items for purchase such as a shrunken head, caskets, antique medical medical equiment that more so resemble torture devices than healing instruments. Anything strange, bizarre, unusual, or obsure is sure to be found at Obscura- as well as the customers.
But then I got to thinking; are the people who shop at Obscura really what most people whould refer to as "freaks" of society, or are they simply human beings who aren't afraid to live and be who they feel they are meant to be. Maybe, just maybe, they feel that conforming to what society tells them is acceptable is unacceptable? Maybe the stock broker chained to his cell phone and a slave to the system of greed and commerce is the "freak?" Why not ask them? Why not talk to the stranger or the "new kid" alone in the corner. You just might make a new friend. And don't be afraid, they won't bite - at least most won't.
